Some youths in Badagry, Lagos State, have warned that installing a Seriki Fulani in the community could spark a crisis.
This concern arose after reports that the Aholu of Kweme Kingdom, Oba Sejiro James, installed Alhaji Mohammed Umar as the Seriki Fulani of Badagry. The ceremony attracted Fulani leaders from across the South-West and Benin Republic.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the installation took place in Sito Gbethrome, along the Seme expressway, where Oba James reportedly presented Umar with traditional staff and beads.
However, Oba James later denied installing Umar as the Seriki Fulani, stating during a press briefing that he was merely a guest at the event, like other traditional rulers.
“I was shocked by the report. It’s impossible for one king among 16 obas in Badagry to install a Seriki Fulani over the others,” Oba James said.
He clarified that the turbaning was conducted by representatives of the Sarkin Fulani of Lagos and the Chairman of the Council of Fulani Chiefs in the Southwest, predating his coronation as Aholu of Kweme Kingdom.
“The picture of me presenting beads was because the Seriki is from Sito Gbethrome, under my kingdom. I was not the only king present or the only one giving advice,” he added.
The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (Badagry Chapter), Gboweh Gabriel, expressed concerns over the installation, citing security risks and dissatisfaction among locals.
“People are unhappy with the development. Badagry is peaceful, and the indigenes want clarity on leadership roles. We are observing the situation and consulting to maintain order,” Gabriel said.
Another youth leader, Deji Ojo, warned that the installation might embolden Fulani herdsmen, potentially increasing clashes with local farmers and residents.
