Fubara joins APC

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced the move on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, confirming growing speculation about his political shift.

His defection comes amid renewed tension in the state, following the recent crossover of 17 pro-Wike lawmakers—led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule—from the PDP to the APC, a development that reshaped the legislative power structure.

For weeks, top APC figures have publicly pushed for Fubara to join their ranks, framing it as a strategic opportunity ahead of the 2027 elections. But the PDP has fiercely opposed his exit, warning that leaving the party that backed his rise to power could severely damage his political future.

PDP NEC member Timothy Osadolor criticized the APC’s attempts to woo Fubara, accusing the ruling party of trying to benefit from work it didn’t do. He argued that defecting could bring Fubara’s political career to an abrupt end and stressed the need for constitutional safeguards to prevent overreach by the presidency.

Meanwhile, the PDP has called on Nigerians and democratic institutions to resist what it claims is an effort by President Bola Tinubu and the APC to push the country toward a one-party system, citing the wave of defections weakening the opposition.
