Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti believes his team can avenge their earlier thrashing by Barcelona and win the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday if they avoid repeating past mistakes.

In October, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga. However, a subsequent slump from Barcelona allowed Madrid to regain the top spot before the winter break.

“We’ve analyzed that match thoroughly,” Ancelotti said during a press conference ahead of the final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. “We started well but faced problems in the second half. This time, we need to replicate the positives and eliminate the errors.”

Acknowledging the heightened pressure of a Clasico final, Ancelotti emphasized the importance of team balance. Despite the attacking firepower provided by Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo Goes, he warned that defensive focus is crucial. “If you defend well, you’re more likely to win,” he added.

Reflecting on Madrid’s successful 2024 season, which included La Liga and Champions League titles, Ancelotti said the defeat to Barcelona was his worst memory of the year. Still, he expressed optimism: “We’re close to another trophy. While anything can happen against a strong opponent like Barcelona, our team has improved.”

Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo, granted a temporary playing license by Spain’s national sports council (CSD), is expected to feature in the final. Ancelotti stressed the importance of neutralizing Olmo’s influence. Meanwhile, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick hinted at Gavi starting in midfield after his impressive performance in the semi-final against Athletic Bilbao.

The final presents Flick with his first chance to win silverware since taking charge of Barcelona. “A victory would be a major boost for everyone and set the tone for the rest of the season,” said Flick.
