The FG pays NYSC members ₦33,000 for February while they await the ₦77,000 increase.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disbursed the monthly ₦33,000 allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members for February, despite the recently approved increase to ₦77,000.

The government had previously announced that the NYSC allowance would be raised to ₦77,000 starting in July 2024, following the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

Several corps members confirmed receiving their February allowance on Friday night, only to realize it remained at ₦33,000—less than half of the approved increase.

This contradicts assurances made in January by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, who stated that the increment was finalized and only awaited the passage of the 2025 budget. He had assured corps members in Katsina State that by February, they would start receiving ₦77,000.

However, February has passed without the promised adjustment, leaving many corps members frustrated amid worsening economic conditions.

A corps member in Oyo expressed disappointment, questioning how they are expected to survive on ₦33,000 when the cost of living is high. Another in Kano criticized the delay, calling it yet another example of the government’s disregard for young Nigerians’ struggles.

The government has yet to provide an explanation for the delay.
