Amorim uncertain about Rashford’s future at Man Utd
Ruben Amorim says he is unsure whether Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will leave Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.
Rashford has been sidelined for 10 games after Amorim made the surprise decision to drop him for United’s derby win against Manchester City in December. The 27-year-old responded by stating he was ready for a “new challenge,” fueling speculation that he could be sold before the transfer window ends on February 3.
Rashford has been linked with several clubs, including AC Milan, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Chelsea, but his future remains uncertain. Amorim was unclear about when the situation will be resolved, with Rashford training on Wednesday but watching Thursday’s 2-1 Europa League win over Rangers from a private box, as Amorim named only nine out of 12 substitutes.
When asked if Rashford could stay at United for the rest of the season, Amorim responded, “I don’t know. I really don’t know. We will see at the end of the window what happens. Then we can talk about it.”
Amorim was also cautious about the future of Argentina winger Alejandro Garnacho, who has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea and Napoli. The 20-year-old started in the win over Rangers, but Amorim didn’t offer any guarantees, saying, “Let’s see in the next few days.”
Following a 3-1 home defeat to Brighton last weekend, Amorim’s record stands at just three wins from 11 Premier League matches. He had earlier described United as “maybe the worst team” in the club’s history after the loss left them in 13th place.
The former Sporting Lisbon manager, who replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag in November, emphasized the need to build a stronger bond with his players. “We need that feeling of belonging,” Amorim said. “For that, we also need time to train and stay together. That’s really important, but we don’t have that.”
He continued, “Pre-season, spending three weeks together, creating something, and then you want to build something new with the players. I want them to know me differently, not always preparing matches under stress—we don’t have the time for that. It’s the secret of teams.”
Amorim also hinted that goalkeeper Andre Onana could return to the starting lineup against Fulham on Sunday after being left out for the Rangers game due to a costly error against Brighton. Altay Bayindir stepped in for midweek duty, but Amorim clarified that it was part of a planned rotation.
“We have two really good goalkeepers; they need time to play and space in the team,” he explained. “This rotation was planned. The mistake was my concern, but we continue with the same plan we had last week.”
