The Borno State government is set to launch the Ngarannam Livestock Improvement and Ranch Settlement project today in Mafa Local Government Area, aimed at enhancing the state’s agricultural and economic potential. The event will feature prominent figures, including the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, and Prof. Attahiru Jega, Co-chair of the Presidential Committee on Implementing Livestock Reforms. This initiative aligns with Governor Babagana Zulum’s strategy to boost the livestock sector, following the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock and Fishery Development to integrate state efforts with federal agricultural policies.
Governor Zulum emphasized the ministry’s focus on developing high-yield livestock breeds, milk production, and fisheries to meet domestic demands and explore export opportunities. He highlighted the increasing demand for milk by yogurt companies and the strategic location of Maiduguri, which provides access to Asian and Arab markets for dairy exports. To ensure the ministry’s success, the governor assigned his deputy, Umar Kadafur, to oversee its activities, citing his expertise and passion for livestock development.
Borno State is already a significant player in Nigeria’s livestock and fishery sector, with over 700 local grazing grounds, 400 wet-season grazing areas, and 1,755 local watering points across its local government areas. This strong foundation is expected to support the new initiative and further enhance the state’s capacity for sustainable livestock production.
Governor Zulum also pledged to complete the Ruga projects in Ngarannam, Mafa LGA, Gajiram in Gubio LGA, and Southern Borno. He announced plans to rehabilitate existing grazing reserves and operationalize them to align with the objectives of the newly established ministry, ensuring the project benefits local communities and drives economic growth.
