BREAKING: Bandits raid Sokoto mosque, killing the Imam and 1 other, and kidnapping worshippers

Early Saturday, bandits launched a deadly attack on worshippers at the Subh prayer in Kiba Ruwa, a community in Sabon-Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Local sources told Egbe Mekun Parrots that the assailants stormed the mosque at dawn and opened fire on congregants. Two people, including the imam leading the prayer, were killed, and several worshippers were abducted, though the exact number remains unclear. Security agencies have been alerted, and residents are living in fear as search and rescue operations begin.

The incident comes weeks after a similar attack in Kebbi State, where bandits raided the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, abducting 26 students. Governor Nasir Idris expressed concern over the withdrawal of military personnel from the school shortly before the attack, despite prior intelligence warnings. The governor called for an investigation into who authorised the troop withdrawal, noting that a security meeting had been convened to address the threat.

The Maga District Head, Muhammad Dantani, also criticised the military’s handling of the situation, highlighting the need for accountability after armed bandits killed a staff member and kidnapped students from the school.
