Elder statesman and leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Chief Edwin Clark, has called for the suspension and reform of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF). In an open letter on Monday, Clark criticized the Forum for deviating from its original purpose of fostering collaboration among governors. He described it as a “platform for power without accountability, influence without responsibility,” alleging that the NGF had evolved into a cabal capable of challenging federal authorities, manipulating the legislature, and obstructing local government autonomy.
Clark detailed the Forum’s transformation from its initial intent of promoting inter-state cooperation and dialogue among governors to a bloc prioritizing control over collaboration. He highlighted the NGF’s alleged overreach, accusing it of reducing state assemblies to mere extensions of the executive. According to him, governors often handpick speakers and legislative members to ensure loyalty and use their influence to secure federal positions, turning the Senate into a “retirement plan” for former governors.
In his letter, Clark described the NGF as a “notorious cabal” resistant to reforms and more focused on power than service. However, he expressed hope that meaningful reforms could transform the NGF into a platform that aligns with democratic principles. He urged for its suspension and reconstitution to restore its original mandate of serving as a collaborative force that prioritizes the welfare of the people over political interests.
Calling for immediate action, Clark warned that the NGF’s failure to embrace reforms could lead to a deepening crisis in Nigeria’s governance structure. He urged the Forum to seize the opportunity to recalibrate, recommit, and rebuild, stressing that its survival and the future of governance in Nigeria depend on its ability to align with democratic values and principles of good governance.
