Customs seized 397 vehicles in 2024 – CG

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) reported 397 vehicle seizures worth ₦5.64 billion in 2024 as part of its efforts to enforce import regulations and safeguard government revenue.

Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi shared this during a press briefing in Abuja on the service’s 2024 achievements.

Adeniyi noted that other significant seizures included 3,785 bales of textiles valued at ₦945 million, 183,527 bags of rice, and various consumer goods, contributing to the protection of local industries and the government’s economic diversification goals.

Additionally, Operation Whirlwind, backed by the National Security Adviser’s Office and the Nigeria Petroleum Corporation Limited, led to the confiscation of 1.7 million liters of petroleum products from smugglers diverting them to neighboring countries.

The CGC highlighted that enforcement efforts resulted in 55 arrests and ongoing investigations into criminal networks.

He stressed the importance of aligning enforcement activities with national security goals and international commitments, positioning NCS as a key player in Nigeria’s security framework.

To enhance its capabilities, the NCS is upgrading its technological infrastructure by integrating geospatial technology and advanced surveillance tools.

Adeniyi emphasized that these advancements, combined with improved intelligence-gathering and capacity-building initiatives, will bolster their ability to address emerging threats while facilitating legitimate trade.
