The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Wahab and Raheem Okoya, sons of billionaire businessman Chief Razaq Okoya, over alleged abuse of the naira. The brothers are expected to appear at the EFCC’s Lagos office for questioning on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The investigation stems from a viral video showing the duo flaunting and spraying bundles of N1,000 notes in a promotional clip for Raheem’s new song titled Credit Alert. In the clip, the brothers, dressed in white agbadas, danced while a mobile policeman held stacks of crisp naira notes, which they tossed into the air.
The video sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the act as a violation of currency regulations and accusing the brothers of displaying disregard for the law. Concerns were also raised about whether the duo would face accountability given their father’s influential status. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the officer seen in the video had been identified and detained.
In an official invitation signed by the Acting Director of the Lagos EFCC Directorate, Michael Wetkas, the Okoya brothers were instructed to report to the Head of the Special Operations Team at the EFCC office on 15A Awolowo Road, Lagos, by 10 a.m. on Monday. The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the invitation in a statement, affirming the commission’s commitment to addressing the issue.
