Indian lawmaker dies by suicide
An Indian lawmaker, Gurpreet Gogi, has tragically died after accidentally shooting himself.
The Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Aam Aadmi Party sustained a gunshot wound to his head, according to his family.
The incident happened around midnight, and Gogi was immediately taken to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors.
Gulf News reported early Saturday morning that Gogi was discovered dead late Friday night with gunshot injuries.
A Punjab Police official confirmed the death, describing it as an apparent accident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja told reporters, “The family members said he accidentally shot himself, resulting in head injuries. Gurpreet Gogi was pronounced dead at the hospital, and his body has been kept in the mortuary at DMC hospital.”
The DCP also mentioned that the precise cause of death would be confirmed once the post-mortem report is available.
“The exact cause of death will be clarified after the post-mortem report is received,” he stated.
Further investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident, Gulf News reported.
Gogi, who joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022, gained public attention after defeating two-time Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in the Ludhiana assembly elections.
In a separate incident in 2019, a Mississippi state legislature candidate, Carl Robinson, fatally shot his wife, Latoya Thompson, before taking his own life after being served with divorce papers.
